Tax returns aren’t always easy. If they were, everyone would do their own. FreshTax is here to make it easy for you. As well as saving you a few dollars, we would like to answer any questions that you may have.

We want you to be at ease, knowing that FreshTax can handle your tax affairs with skill and professionalism.

How does it work?

When you sign up to the FreshTax service, you provide us with details of bank accounts that you use for business transactions. If you don’t separate your personal and business transactions, we are sorry, but this won’t work.

We use a specific software program that imports all transactions. Don’t worry, it’s read-only: we can’t make payments, receive payments or control your bank account in any way. We can only see what comes in and goes out.

The software then lines these transactions up for FreshTax staff to “code” into specific income/expense categories. If there’s a transaction we’re unable to decipher, we’ll get in touch with you and you can tell us what it was for.

As we go through your bank transactions, coding each one, the software will put together a series of reports that help us to file your GST and income tax returns, and also provide the numbers we need to keep your dashboard up-to-date.

All you need to do is log on to your FreshTax account each month and you’ll see the latest information. We’ll always send you a note to let you know that your dashboard has been updated.

If you use Xero, the process is similar, but the bank transactions have already been gathered and likely coded. We review and collate the data from this, then use the figures produced to populate your dashboard.


What do I need to get started?

You need a business bank account or accounts. Credit card accounts are also okay. You will also need your IRD (GST) number, and to be able to upload your signature.


How do I swap over from my existing accountant?

Changing to FreshTax is easy: once you give us authority to act for you, we write to your previous accountant and have your accounts transferred. You don’t even have to call them.


What happens if I want to use my existing accountant to do my end of year tax return but want the advantages of the FreshTax monthly dashboard?

Yes, you can leave your year-end returns with your existing accountant, but use FreshTax to perform your monthly and bimonthly accounts.


What businesses does Fresh Tax help?

We assist all small businesses — sole traders, partnerships and companies — GST-registered or not. Traditional accountants have been charging far too much for these accounts for too long.


What is a sole trader?

If you’re a sole trader, you’re in complete control of your business. The profits are entirely yours, but so are all the responsibilities and liabilities — including any debts your business incurs. Becoming a sole trader doesn’t require any legal paperwork, which is why many businesses in New Zealand start off as sole traders.


What is a partnership?

If you’re in a partnership you’ve chosen to pool your assets with others into one business, with the profits and losses of the business divided between you. These types of businesses are established with partnership agreements, which set out in writing the division of profits and losses.


What is a company?

A company is a business that is a legal entity in its own right, separate from its shareholders. This is important because the company owns all its assets and liabilities, which means your responsibilities for any debts are generally limited to the amount you’ve invested as share capital in the business.

Every company in New Zealand has to be incorporated — or registered — with the Companies Office (the national registrar of companies).


What does it cost?

Our service fees:

  • GST returns only ($49 +GST per month)
  • Income tax and GST ($99 +GST per month).
  • Xero users ($99 +GST per month; excludes Xero fees).
  • Xero users, annual accounts only ($599 +GST per year).
